Is it a crime to fall in love? asks CPI(M) MP

Is it a crime to fall in love? CPI(M) MP Jharna Das Baidya asked on Wednesday in Rajya Sabha with incidents of honour killing on rise.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Das referred to a series of honour killings in the recent times and demanded strict action from the government by coming out with a law to deal with it.

Her remarks prompted an opposition MP to quip “it is not honout killing but dishonourable killing” while Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien said the entire House is concerned.

The 54-year MP from Tripura said she started hearing about honour killing only after she came to Delhi on Rajya Sabha assignment.

“We in Tripura or the north-east have never heard about hinour killings. We are hearing it niw. What kind of a country is this? Why is it happening?” Das said as she talked about a youth being targeted in Telangana for love.

“Won’t the government do anything? Will it continue? Love doesn’t have any caste, religion. Is it a crime to fall in love,” she said adding youth are being targeted for falling in love with upper caste men or women.

Besides Telangana, she said similar incidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country.

As per latest figures, the number of honour killings has seen a whopping seven-fold increase from 28 in 2014 to 251 in 2015.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for the majority of honour killings (168), followed by Gujarat (25) and Madhya Pradesh (14).
